Morbid obesity is a major public health problem in the UK and throughout the developed world. Science and technology continue to advance to provide safer and more effective means to achieve better health. Coming soon to the United Kingdom is the EsophyX™ and StomaphX™ procedures.

EsophyX™ is a new incisionless procedure to prevent pain from acid reflux. Reflux disease, in addition to being a potential cause of esophageal cancer and other diseases of the oesophagus and throat, is painful and unpredictable. Heartburn and searing pain that seems to be rising in the chest can be definite signs of Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease or GORD. Surgeries are available so that you needn't rely on medication but are generally quite invasive. When performed by Dr. Elliot Goodman, an expert in gastric disorders and bariatric surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan, NYC, GORD from a failed gastroesophageal (GE) valve can be reduced or stopped altogether.

EsophyX™ is an incisionless procedure that recreates a functional GE valve. An endoscope is run down the oesophagus where suction pulls a flap of tissue down in order to guard the oesophageal opening from the harmful effects of stomach acid. Fasteners keep the tissue permanently in place where it will eventually fuse to function naturally. At the end of recovery, a protective barrier prevents acid reflux and the symptoms that go along with it.
Common indications of Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) include the following:

  • Heartburn
  • Inflammation or ulceration of the oesophagus
  • Hoarseness or sore throat
  • Persistent cough
  • Excessive clearing of the throat
  • Intolerance to certain foods
  • Pain or discomfort in the chest

Have you had a bariatric surgical procedure and the weight is starting to come back after all you've gone through? It does happen, and the ill effects on the health that come with being overweight or obese are just as likely to return with it. With a StomaphyX™ incisionless procedure, a correction can be made to your gastrointestinal tract with even shorter recovery than laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Elliot Goodman has performed bariatric surgeries at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan, NYC since 2004, and been involved in bariatrics since 1997.

Sometimes, after a gastric bypass surgery or other bariatric procedure, the stomach can stretch itself back to its original size. Often, without the proper diet regulation and exercise, it is just a matter of time. Patients who have lost considerable weight through stomach stapling or the LAP BAND suddenly regain the unhealthy weight they had previously lost. Obesity surgery does change and save lives, but it is not foolproof and adjustments are sometimes necessary. That's where StomaphyX™ comes in.

StomaphyX™ incisionless gastrointestinal surgery uses endoscopic tools that require no cutting of the body and even less down time than laparoscopy. Vacuum suction pulls the stomach wall into aUsing a series of fasteners that cinch up the stomach walls, the maximum volume of the stomach decreases and caloric intake falls with it.

The advantages of StomaphyX™ are as follows:

  • No incisions
  • Adjustable or revisable transorally to preserve future treatment possibilities
  • Minimizes patient loss of time, even less than laparoscopic procedures
  • Endoscope is flexible for atraumatic insertion

EsophyX™
EsophyX™ is FDA cleared and CE marked

Indication:

The EndoGastric Solutions (EGS) EsophyX™ System with Serofuse™ Fastener is indicated for use in endoluminal, transoral tissue approximation, full thickness plication and ligation in the GI tract and is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic chronic gastro oesophageal reflux disease in patients who require and respond to pharmacological therapy. It is also indicated to narrow the gastro oesophageal junction and reduce hiatal hernia ≤ 2cm in size in patients with symptomatic chronic gastro oesophageal reflux disease.
Benefits:

The EsophyX™ Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) procedure is a novel surgical procedure for the treatment of reflux disease. The TIF procedure is based on the principles of surgical repair of the antireflux barrier and is intended to deliver similar benefits as the time-proven laparoscopic fundoplication.
The TIF procedure reconstructs a robust antireflux barrier, thus restoring the gastro oesophageal junction back to what is believed to be its natural anatomical geometry.

StomaphyX™

Indication:

The StomaphyX™ device is a sterile, single-use device for use in endoluminal trans-oral tissue approximation and ligation in the GI tract.

Fastener Delivery System:

  1. Align tissue port with tissue to be fastened
  2. Tissue is drawn into the chamber
  3. Fastener is deployed creating the plication

Multiple Fasteners-Single Insertion:

StomaphyX™ is the first transoral, endoluminal fastener delivery system capable of delivering multiple fasteners with a single insertion giving physicians greater flexibility when evaluating surgical options. StomaphyX is the pioneering device for achieving tissue approximation in the GI tract and is built on EndoGastric Solutions' platform technology that is setting the standard for endoluminal surgery. Coupled with patented SerosaFuse fastener technology, StomaphyX enables serosa-to-serosa fusion, the strongest tissue bond, which is intended to improve the durability of the plication(s).

Benefits:

  • Less clinical risk - no need for incisions
  • Enables different procedures for different anatomies
  • Preserves future treatment options
  • Less pain than laparoscopy
  • Faster recovery than with open/laparoscopic procedures
